Following the Great Council of 233 AC, King Aegon of the House Targaryen, fifth of his name, sits the Iron Throne. He struggles to maintain power and influence, having created several edicts that give powers and protections to the realm’s smallfolk. This has created derision between Aegon and many of his powerful, influential vassals, having broken their various betrothals.
In the East, Daemon III Blackfyre and Aegor Rivers plot to take advantage of the uncertainties of Aegon V’s reign, and invade the seven Kingdoms and claim the Iron Throne.
